Is it ok to insert NOW() into a VARCHAR column?

Can I directly insert NOW() into a VARCHAR field or do I have to use DATE_FORMAT(NOW()) to explicitly convert it to a string?

Please don’t reply that it should be stored in a DATE or DATETIME field as the question is specifically about inserting NOW() into a VARCHAR field.

Many thanks in advance.
