Disable strict mode MySQL

I can't find the MySql server CNF file on my Mac using the my.cnf keywords. I'm trying to disable strict mode since there are command lines I am not allowed to use. For instance:

insert into branch(branch_name) values ('Lloyds') gives the following error:

"Error Code: 1364. Field 'branch_name' doesn't have a default value"

Does anyone know where how to disable this? I have already set the SQL mode to 'no_engine_substitution" on the preferences tab on MySQL workbench, restarted the session, but it didnt get fixed. Does anyone know how fit it? I'm using Mac OS x Mojave 10.14.3.
