Oops indeed Bjorn. There was me congratulating myself on having understood everything (and thinking all was well because the example worked) only to find I didn't even spot it. I even deluded myself the above proc dealt with the situation of less columns in the source because the manual said nulls were generated for missing columns.

I've copied your above post for future reference should I need it. Again, many thanks.
