Hi.

I fear i don't get you. What are these hierarchies? Is it a question about a schema? Then you may be better off in the "General" forum.

Indeed I don't know about recursion in MySQL.

If "locking a parent and some of its children" means row-level locking, then MyISAM cannot do it. You can just lock whole MyISAM tables. InnoDB can do row-level locking.
