INDEX (foo(10))
is supported, but is almost useless for any practical purpose.

UNIQUE (foo(10))
Is a constraint on the first 10 chars of foo. This is either (1) not what you want, or (2) a poor way to design the foo column.

INDEX (big_col1, big_col2, big_col3(10))
is a trick to avoid the size limitation on indexes. But then I have questions about the schema design.
