I do not know any workaround as I still do not know what the exact cause is.
Oliver is working on a program to reproduce the problem. If this works on MySQL servers, then there is a chance to get at the problem.
I guess it is very difficult to make a somewhat reproducible test case. If you can come up with such a beast, I'd really appreciate it (and I believe other users, including Oliver, as well).
