You did not mention, how this "mess" shows up. I mean, what is the error that you get before you run 'myisamchk'?
Is there heavy concurrency on the master (many users)?
Do you allow write access on the slaves?
Are you aware of the following paragraph of the reference manual?
"5.8.3.7. Using myisamchk for Crash Recovery
If you run mysqld with --skip-external-locking (which is the default on some systems, such as Linux), you can't reliably use myisamchk to check a table when mysqld is using the same table."
