What happens if the size of an index file exceeds physical RAM?

Hi, what happens if the size of an index file exceeds physical RAM?

Does it start swapping, thus likely leaving the system unresponsive (and possibly unrecoverable)? If you turn swap off, would it simply crash?

My MySQL server version is: 5.1.42-community-log MySQL Community Server (GPL)

Thanks,

-Jeff
