memory cache usage

Hi

I am using mysql 5.5 on OpenSuse 11. The server has 32gb of ram and mysql seems to be using only 700mb virtual and (approx) 1.2gb of memory. But I see around 28gb being cached from the top command "cached" item on swap: row. There is only one table in the database of 2 gb in size. The data gets loaded and there are few selects in table.
Why is that 28gb is being cached? what does this mean? Could someone explain me please?

Thanks
