Thanks for the response.
We have some elaborate operational scripts set up to manage the merge table, so converting to partitions would be a big effort. I've also read that MyISAM can be a good choice when dealing with large, non-transactional tables, though I realize MyIsam usage is being discouraged. Performance is important with our wide, heavily indexed table.
I appreciate the information about buffering when mixing table types.
