As an addition, you can create a view to contain the relationship among the 3 tables mentioned in Jay's explanation. This can make it easy to query relationship from both sides, without getting involved in the details of how the tables connect.

But, the same caveats apply - you must know your data and your queries and you must continue to monitor performance to ensure the addition of a view gives you the coding flexibility you need without giving up performance.
