got error 136 from storage engine

I used a myisam table test4, and after I have inserted more than 500,000,000 records, the filesize of test4.MYI is about 17G, and then I got a such error "got error 136 from storage engine" . As I know its caused by no room for inserting index, and I think it's because the index file is too large, and how can I enlarge this file limit? (i use linux system, and ext3 filesystem, and its no such limit for the filesize.) And how can i insert more datas into this table?Thank you very much!
