this should not have happened if you did just change MAX_ROWS.
Can you please look at SHOW CREATE TABLE ... if the auto_increment column is still listed as it should be?
If it is ok, please look at SHOW TABLE STATUS. It should tell you what the current auto_increment value is. You can fix this number with SET INSERT_ID=number. With the next insert, the auto_increment value will jump to this number.
