Show Create Table results for the two tables please.
Is the query cache enabled? If so, had that first query been run recently, or at least since the last boot?
Left Join forces table scan and summing of nulls, why not inner join?
How much RAM?
Does the 2nd query induce swapping?
what is key_buffer_size?
