truncate table and InnoDB

Hi
When I use truncate table syntax on InnoDB tables it does not seem to start the auto_increment field from 1. It is starting from the last insert id. Why is it so? Truncate table does not work on InnoDB - any explanation will be appreciated.
My MySQL version is 4.1.8.
