Distributed Query Processing

I am looking for some information on distributed query capabilities of MySQL (in both homogeneous and heterogeneous distributed dbms environment). I could not find any information on this topic anywhere.
I know MySql allows replication and Master Slave relations. But I am not sure what queries to implement for replicating databases?
My other question is What is XA(extended architecture) and how can it be used in distributed transactions.
You help will be much appreciated.
