Size of ibdata1 bigger than content

Hello,

we have a InnoDB that only contains one DB (called asm). The file ibdata1 has been ~600mb big. The dump that I created was about 100mb big. Then I dropped the asm-DB, stopped the server and manually deleted the InnoDB files.

After I had imported the dump, the file ibdata1 was 210mb big.

I guess this behaviour (ibdata1 bigger than content) is normal?
How can I compress the DB from time to time (without dumping data, dropping DB and reimporting)?

mysql-max 4.1.12 on linux
