does innodb table need 'optimize table'?

I'm using mysql 5.0.90 innodb tables and I started the Mysql Innodb with 'innodb_file_per_table' option. applications frequently update ,insert ,delete the tables.
Do I need to do the 'optimize table' periodically to reduce the fragments in table files?
And will innodb engine remove the fragments automatically?

And When I use 'optimize table' ,it locks the table over 10 minutes, this is cause the application timeout error. is there a better way to reduce the fragment by 'optimize table' ?
