Did some research and found out the problem.

Apparently the very latest Maxtor Diamondmax 10 200GB SATA hard drives (more specifically, their latest firmware for said drives) have compatibility issuses with the socket 939 Asus AV8 Deluxe motherboard SATA raid controllers.. both the onboard VIA and the Promise controllers.

Maxtor is sending me a firmware "downgrade" for these drives which is supposed to cure the problem.

The engineer I spoke with also said there were problems with the latest maxtor 300gb Diamondmax drive firmware and that motherboard as well. I would assume the problem extends to the whole AV8 series, if not others as well.

Hope this helps someone elsedown the line.. it's been quite a headache :)
