I reinstalled 5.6 and let the install locations default (I did not use the defaults before for both the program and data directories) and everything works.The only change I made to the my.ini before was to add a client section and add credentials and made the same changes this time.
I'll try again with 5.7 when I am not up against a schedule to get some tools up for my colleages - thanks for your help!
