The manual https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/innodb-deadlock-detection.html says InnoDB tries to pick small transactions to rollback in the event of deadlock.

To understand what's going on with what you're talking about, I'd want a script and concurrent innodb monitor output.
