I think that's a good guess. I figured some sort of limiting was occurring with the composite index that prevented the deadlock.

Is there any place I can find out more about why this might have occurred? This caught me by surprise and was very difficult to figure out. It wasn't present any transaction guidelines or explanation that I came across.
