I've added an index that seems to have helped. We get a bit of a slow down, but the hanging has stopped (for now). This makes me wonder if all this has to do with temporary disk storage. I've read in some of the performance posts that setting /tmp up as tmpfs has helped. Is this something you would advocate? Where exactly does mysql and innodb set up its temporary space?
