Paul, lately I've been wondering about MySQL's spatial extensions and asked myself the very question of the topic starter and found your answer interesting. I was also seeing if postGres would be an option or if I should bother with spatial at all, and just go plain vanilla MySQL InnoDB, which is kinda required as i have dependencies and probably need transactions. How's postGres with the latter? I don't know postGres, but it might be worth learning. I use PHP, so switching DB's shouldn't be too hard...

Anyway, thanks for the insights.
