I searched through the mysql source code...
apparently, in mi_check.c, there's logic that always forces spatial indexes to be rebuilt from keycache and not using filesort.

perhaps this is why it breaks when using myisamchk to force a sort repair directly.
so, the mysql developers must have purposely disabled filesort rebuilds for spatial keys; they must also know that it doesnt work...

now, the big question is 'why dont filesort repairs work for spatial indexes & is this a permanent limitation for spatial indexes in mysql, or is this something that can & should be fixed???'
