First, for not being a professional full time programmer you sure are dealing with pretty heavy stuff no? :) I am impressed !

About the altitude. I apologies, I've been working too many hours and read altitude instead of latitude (dyslexia anyone?). I was really confused why altitude would be an issue but who am I to judge :)

I actually had also not realized that the example I was using did happen to have such high latitude. I am working within the continental US region so I have no idea where that point came from, unless it belongs to Alaska (but I did not think I had any points there). So you gave me something to look into. Maybe if I make sure all my points are truly in the continental US things will work for me.

And I guess the good news is that you are probably right the high latitudes are causing problems. Could you report this as a bug? I can help you come up with an example for the bug report to illustrate this issue, if you do not have time.

About the MBR. This is interesting. To work on my clustering problem, I wrote a program that generates X amount of random waypoints within the continental US. When I generate a large number say 100000 and display the points in a google map they form the shape of the continental US not a box like I would expect the MBR to generate, specially around the Florida area. No?. So I wonder if the version of MySQL I am using is supporting more than MBR. I need to check on this to.

SO much to learn. Do you happen to know a good source of docs/tutorial for GSI with MySQL by any chance? I find information on the web really lacking.

It took me a lot time to figure out the clustering process. And had little to work with. I am even considering writing an article to help others out. This is something I would have thought people needed a lot. Specially doing Google maps on iPhone.
