Yeh this is hte case, the implementation in extremely basic and not really up to par with other DBMS's. Unforntunately i don't see a good implmentation soon, there is a branch that does some stuff better, but a full implementation would be awesome. We can only hope for some weird reason sun finds it important to implement these features. With the raise of the geoweb geo information gets more and more important, and therefor a DBMS supporting it also gets more important. I hope MySQL sees that and will implement proper support soon otherwise the market will start using postgres more and more in the future.
