Creating a polygon from existing decimal data

I have a mysql table full of lat / long data representing the bounds of rectangles. Before I discovered the GIS extensions I was trying to build a system to search the table for the rectangle that bounds a given point.

I am confused at the syntax to populate the columns and then search the table.

Any help would be appreciated.
