ADO VB6 returns only ??????????????????1 for linestring geometry

Hello, I am new to this mySQL GIS spatial extension data types thing. I would very much like it to work for me. When I query a database that return astext(g) from a select statement using VB6 ADODB I get only a string equal to ???????????????????????8 (the final number matching the final number of the valid result which comes up in the modeler query result set just fine. What am I missing in the ADO result set? Have tried various collations and schemas. Nothing seems to change the odd and unusable result. Can anyone help me. Thank you. Brad in Reno, NV.
