Can Not Create Geospatial Table

I am trying to create a geospatial table using the following:

CREATE TABLE geo1 (g GEOMETRY);

I get the following error:

ERROR 1064: You have an error in your SQL syntax near 'GEOMETRY)' at line 1

Does this mean that our version (see query below) of MySQL doesn't support geospatial tables?

mysql> select version();
+-----------+
| version() |
+-----------+
| 3.23.58 |
+-----------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

if so, is there a way to add the geospatial extension?
