Performance: huge number of records vs huge number of fields

hi there
I have a data file with 600 variables measure periodically at time. I'm wondering if I design a table with 600 fields, how bad is the performance?
Or I can design a simple table, each record will hold one variable at one time. But the number of recrods will go VERY big, about 18 millions a month. I worry about the performance of this approach.
Anybody can give me idea about this?
Thanks a lot, Chi
