The best bounding box selection (to show results on map)

Hi,

I want to show results out of a table of about 800.000 entries on a map. Therefore I need to search for a latitude/longitude between some values.

Does anyone know of any other practical know-how / howto's on selecting results based on a lat/lng bounding box (so: lat between (x and y) and lng between (v and w))? It seems 'everybody' needs this those days (to show results on a (google/yahoo/microsoft) map) :)

Any information would be great!
