How much variability will there be in your lookup, do you know? If there's little enough variability that you can create and use constant masks rather than having to calculate each mask on the fly before you use it, then a bitfield could be good.

On the other hand, given how cheap disc space is these days--about a penny a megabyte, isn't it?--why not go for convenience?
