As I mentioned automatic failover is a requirement, so if MySQL does not support it, it is too bad; I will have to implement it somehow by external means.
Thanks for the tip regarding the abstraction layer. I think that I am ok with the abstractions for now, but I will keep your words in mind.
You have got my idea regarding data sharding correctly. BTW, this approach is almost the same that BigTable/ HyperTable/ Hbase are using.
