Processor at 99.9%, memory at 5%. Configuration help?

I bought a new server, which has over 300 queries a second, searching through tables of around 30,000 entries. There are a few updates, but very few inserts.

Anyways, my website takes about 20 seconds to respond since mysql is bogging it all down. The thing is, my 1.5 gigs of memory are hardly used at all.

My mysql installation has the default configuration.

What options can I change so that more memory is used, and less processor? (How big can certain caches be, what will help my server run quicker?)

Thanks a lot
