This is an intreresting topic anyhow so I reply on this special aspect in an extra post.

You suggest using MATCH ... AGAINST instead of LIKE %..%. I agree that it is better for using indexes. But: The results are significantly different.

If I search in my case for 'schul', I receive 0 results with Matchagainst and 31 with Like! As I understand it, Matchagainst needs a big database to give sensible results and is capable of intelligent text search. Like is the other way round, the less data, the better (performance) and only capable of stupid searches.

I think that both have their reason and their best-to-use-cases but you cannot blindly substitute them. Do you agree? Or did I miss some point/possibilities?
