Yes, kind of. The slow_log said 21k examined rows before and now 11k.

OK, i understand quite well that you can only explain one EXPLAIN after the other, but it just would've been quite sweet, if there would be such a rule of thumb. Thanks for clarifying!

The query is fast yet so it seems that you solved my problem! Thanks a lot for your patience!! I learned a lot.

Now I can try to prove my new knowledge to some more queries that get slow without optimizing. I hope this is also a problem of correct indexing. Perhaps I open a new similar thread if I fail there... :-)

BTW: I do not completely understand why the problem occoured at all because the system ran years without this index and without having that problem. But sometimes perhaps it is better not to dig too deep...
