Rick,
I am most thankful for all your help. I have been reading your other messages that appear related to this one.. i see you redoing lots of queries like the one below..
Can you explain to me why the X. A. values are assigned...

select X.ct, X.sev, X.msgNum, X.SDS_loghost,
A.aCtion
from
( select count(*) as ct, D.sev, D.msgNum, D.SDS_loghost
from syslogD D
group by D.msgNum
) X
left join syslogDAlert_data A on A.msgID = X.msgNum
