I want to also offer my thanks for the reference to DNS as being the root of the problem. I used a different solution for my ubuntu linux 9.10 servers running MySQL 5.1.37, which worked nicely for our small LAN.
I added the IP address and hostname of each computer that needed to make a connection from into my /etc/hosts file. The connections work lighting fast now on my Vista and XP(SP3) machines.
