MySQL Server crashes - spawning too many threads.

Could be something I tweaked?? Or could be something I didn't tweak and should have! I did find out that interactive_timeout set to the default could cause this problem on occassion (but not in which version of MySQL). My interactive_timeout had been reset to the default.

I do NOT have access to the box except thru phpMyAdmin (we're working on this). two nites ago it crashed with the same error but it was made to sound like an OS error and not a database error at the time. I checked the stats that I had taken and nothing but Aborted Client connections seemed strange (and they've been high for a week and a half).

The query caching has been set back to being low and should be tweaked but I'd rather have the server stable first.

here's the nitty gritty details:

Mysql 4.0.20 ONLY is running on a dual processer box with 2 cpus and 4GB ram. Supposedly MySQL only uses about half the RAM. At the moment most of the tables are MyISAM. I've been working on the slow queries. The box was rebooted about 10 days ago for a resaon separate from MySQL.
