I'm not a hardware guru and the Intel box has become a bit of a mystery to me. But the concepts remain the same whether you use solaris or Linux. I highly recommend you buy the O'Reilly book "High Performance MySQL" . There's a really good section on hardware for LAMP (linux). Plus there are a lot of other reallly good tips on optimizing your Server.

I put off buying the book and wished I'd gotten it sooner. I believe you can get it on Amazon (I buy my books locally if they carry them).
