thanks for your reply.

my pool size is:
| innodb_buffer_pool_size | 2147483648 |
which is about half of the available memory of 4Gb.

how do you suggest i should go about altering my index and make it compound as you suggest here? This table is being constantly updated with live records, and is about 10/11 million rows.. It can take days for a simple alter command.
