For me the performance is fine (when mysqld starts), but the longer it runs, the slower it gets. The default benchmarking suite that comes with MySQL clocks my Mac OS X Server overall at around 2,000 queries per second (since it's not multi-threaded, that seems pretty good to me) without pushing the CPU usage above 8%. But my problem is that it just gets slower and slower the more total queries run since mysqld was started (or restarted). There's another thread about it here:
