What makes you think the 2 select statement are the same?

The extra table in the 1st statement is not unused, the result of the 2 queries has to be very different.

The query with 2 tables is doing a cartesian product, and the result of it is a table of 1665 * 13656 rows, which exceeds 20 millions rows.
