If I may...
Updating the summary would basically be like calculating on the spot... it would require extra I/O operations and the like.
How often are you actually going to need the data for reports and such? I would recommend just telling the users "Results cached for 3 hours" or something. Once again, the topic of speed (cache) vs realtime data (accuracy) comes up.
