Have you got indexes on all the join columns and the order_date column?

You might want to add the time onto your query as well (00:00:00 in the first case and 23:59:59 in the 2nd case) - not sure you query will be looking at all the data, either that or specify the next day (ie. 2005-09-01 to 2005-10-01. Just a thought. Be worth checking to make sure you are getting the correct results.
