How to log slow DMLs

I'm currently running MySQL 5.1. My application is periodically slow when running hundreds of DML statements but we could not pinpoint which DML statements were contributing to the slowness.

Is there a way to log slow DMLs? There is a log-slow-queries parameter but that only provides slow running queries. Is that a similar parameter for logging DMLs or how can I monitor the database in real time? We do not have MySQL Enterprise Monitor.

thanks in advance.
