the 8.0 explain plan output seems familiar, it resembles somewhat Oracle isn't it? :)
The upgrade now is not an option for the usual "caution" reasons of the management.
As for the long text columns I too suspected that, but I have created a test table without them (copying all the other data obviously) and the query is nevertheless still slow ..:-(
