Right. Typical setup:
1X Loadbalancer forwarding requests to
2X API Nodes with apache and the PHP scripts connecting to "localhost". API nodes connected to
2X Storage nodes
You don't have to loadbalance SQL. Loadbalance your web requests (easy to do) and use local SQL nodes.
