I just started looking into this and don't know the answer for sure, so if somebody else could confirm this or correct me....
I would think your system should be able to stretch it a bit by using the virtual memory in the swap partition, but at some point that is used up too and you probably will crash with an out-of-memory error. Also, using the swap partition would make it rrrreeeeaaaaalllllyyyyyy slooooooooooooooooooooow. Kind of like running a newer windows version on a really small RAM - you can go get a cup of coffee after each mouse-click...
